The Aqua Instructor Certificate trains fitness leaders to develop and conduct safe and effective aqua exercise programs for the general community. The competency standards which form the basis for this course are from the Fitness and Community Recreation Training Packages.
The Aqua Instructor Certificate has been designed to provide a systematic approach to designing, delivering and evaluating water based exercise sessions for low risk participants.
Pre-requisite
There are no pre-requisites to attend the course however we recommend that you have participated in and observed a minimum of three aqua exercise classes and completed the observation CD and assessment prior to attending the course.
The Fitness Industry registering bodies require the completion of a Certificate III in Fitness for full certification and registration.
Insurance
There are several Insurance companies who will insure instructors holding the Aqua Instructor Certificate without the full Certificate III in Fitness
Course Duration
40 hours including face to face contact and take home assignments
Certification
On successful completion of this course participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for the following unit towards a Certificate III in Fitness:
· SRF AQA 001B Instruct water based fitness classes for the general population.
· SRC AQU 008B Apply the principles of movements in water to aquatic activities

Course Content
The Aqua Exercise Leader’s Certificate consists of both theoretical and practical components including:
· Develop and prepare a plan for a water based fitness class
· Aqua science and hydrodynamic principles
· Display expertise in instructing water based fitness classes
· Effective use of music in the aqua exercise class
· Aqua exercise for specific populations
· Water safety techniques for the aqua exercise leader.
Assessment
All assessment components must be completed within 6 months of the module commencement date. The following components must be satisfactorily completed prior to certification:
· Provide observation checklists on three aqua aerobic sessions from CD
· design three lesson plans
· design and deliver a 30-minute aqua exercise session
· Provide video or DVD of a 45 – 60 minute class you have planned and conducted.
· complete and submit an open book assessment at the practical sessions
· Provide evidence of a current cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) award.
